Allover Greece From A to Z
Giros, Syrtaki, Lefkas, Athens. These are just a few words that come to mind when you think of Greece. The rest can be found in the entire Greek alphabet.
A Athens
Athens, the capital of Greece, located on the mainland. In 1896 the first Olympics were held here. And, the city owes its fame to the Parthenon on the Acropolis, a hill in Athens.
B baklavas
A delicious Greek dessert after dinner? Baklavas (pronounced baklaavaa) is a real winner. After this delicious honey and nut pastry like nothing else. It is a powerful court, before you know you’re full.
C Cyclades
The archipelago, consisting of 56 large and small islands in the deep blue Aegean Sea is part of Greece. In winter there is relatively little rain, the islands in the summer a bit bare and barren.
D Dodecanese
Rhodes, Karpathos, Kalymnos and Kos are the four largest islands of the Dodecanese. The islands lie east of the Cyclades, the Turkish coast. A visit by boat to Turkey is one of the possibilities during a stay at one of these islands.
E First Holy War
In ancient Greece in the 6th century BC, the First Holy war. In 590 BC came to end the war between Kirra (on the Gulf of Corinth) and the Delphic Amfiktyons.
F Frappe
Frappe and ouzo, the national drink of Greece. Before dinner, an aperitif or just a snack, delicious and refreshing. The ancient Greeks ouzo’tje drink at least 1 per day.
G Giros
One of the most famous Greek dishes. It is therefore not surprising that you do during your holiday on any menu can ends. The Greek pork is also delicious to eat with pita bread (pita giros).
Hermes H
Gods play an important role in Greek history. Hermes is one of them. Hermes, which literally means messenger, the god of travelers, shepherds and liars).
I Ionian Islands
Kefalonia, Corfu, Zakynthos and Lefkada are the four largest islands of the Ionian sea, followed by a number of small islands (ie Ithaki, Paxi and Kythira). In the winter it rains a lot in the summer these islands ‘green’.

M Meltemi
A very strong wind in July and August over the Aegean Sea blows. This wind is the ferry in the road. Also on the beach, feel the wind blow through your body.
N Nature
Greek nature, especially in the months April and May, breathtaking. Beautiful forests, olive trees, cypresses, cactuses, basil and palm trees provide a fantastic picture. Greece has a total of ten national parks, both on the islands and the mainland.
Recommendations are:
• Samaria Gorge (Crete), a beautiful walking towards the sea from about 5 to 8 hours.
• Enosberg (Kefalonia), where pines grow dark Kefalonia (cephalon ensis abies).
• Olympos (Olympus), an impressive mountain massif has an area of more than 4,000 acres
O Jackie Onassis
Born in East Hampton on July 28, 1929 and deceased in New York on May 19, 1994. Jackie Onassis was the wife of President John F. Kennedy. After Kennedy’s assassination in 1968 she married Aristotle Onassis, a Greek businessman. After their marriage they lived on the island of Scorpios, near the green island of Lefkada.
P Parga
This typical Greek picturesque town opposite Corfu in the Ionian Sea. What Parga as picturesque is that it lies on a hillside, with stunning views of the harbor with many small streets and cozy cafes. For one week vacation is ideal, but a trip by boat from Corfu, Kefalonia or Lefkas is also fine to do!
R Roman era
In the Roman era the Romans ruled Greece. Marcus Antonio was the first ruler and Greece sailed so under the influence of Rome.
S Syrtaki
The Greek dance Syrtaki has become known for the film Zorba, The Greeks. In many a tavern in Greece hear this friendly, sultry music past, where you can dance to Syrtaki. At night, when the food runs out, you are challenged to do with this wonderful Greek dancing.
T Tzatziki
This delicious appetizer of yogurt, garlic and cucumber, you really have eaten when you are on holiday in Greece. Delicious for bread or a nice piece of toast. In the Netherlands, also available in supermarkets, but the best course you eat in a Greek tavern.
Rest of You
Rest and relaxation: this certainly satisfies a holiday in Greece. Do you want to look up the crowds, visit the more touristy islands. Examples include writing Crete, Rhodes and Kos.
V Volcano Island
Santorini, a volcanic Greek island, by the action of a volcano, leading to pebbled beaches and also black in color. The landscape on the western side of the island is very impressive with its huge, rising from the water, steep cliffs whose tops are decorated with bright white houses. Bright white houses with blue windows you must have recognized in the travel brochures.
W Weather
Greece has a Mediterranean climate: summers are dry and hot, winters are mild and mainly limited precipitation. In high season it is really hot, with temperatures rising to 40-45 degrees in the interior. A sea or a swimming pool nearby is certainly not a luxury.
X Xenophanes
The poet Xenophanes opposed the traditional representation of the (all too human) gods, as found in the Iliad and Odyssey of Homer, who were known throughout the Greek-speaking world. There is one God according to Xenophanes, but nothing like humans. Also, according to Xenophanes human knowledge not claim absolute certainty.
Y Ypsilon
Ypsilon is the 25th letter of the Latin alphabet. The forerunner of the Western alphabet was developed in Egypt, the Greeks are again derived from an alphabet. To display Greek words were then the letters Y and Z added.
Z of Zakynthos
Zakynthos is increasingly being discovered by tourism. Many small, cute complexes are becoming all-inclusive resorts, local taverns and disappear. Typical tourist attractions of this island the Caretta-Caretta turtles that are one meter long and the ship wreck in the north of the island.
